WOTD Friday: Fatiloquent

Image
fa·til·o·quent   adjective   \fā ˈ tiləkwənt, fə ˈ -\ Prophetic; fatidical; speaking of fate. · Other form(s) : Fatiloquist · Etymology : Latin fatiloquus : fati- (fr.  fatum * ) + -loquus (fr.  loqui ) · See also : Fatidic ; Psalm 33:9   · Sample usage : In the beginning, a fatiloquent fellow spoke spake the world into existence. " Fatiloquist " is not to be confused with "ventriloquist". *So apparently the Latin noun fatum  is itself derived from for/fārī/fātus sum , a deponent verb meaning "to speak, talk, say". PIE = *bʰeh₂- BTW, you need to click each and every hyperlinked word above, because one of them is not like the others... #suspense

Words Of The Day: An Announcement

Lately in the course of daily reading, I've been acquainted with some particularly delicious English adjectives. It has been my custom [A] to raise an eyebrow whilst typing in a dictionary search, then [B] to grin-smirk at the monitor for anywhere from 5 seconds to 25 ( t  being correlated inversely to the Credibility Factor of the proposed PIE root), before finally [C] filing under Things That Exist and getting on with my day. But some of this shit is too good to keep to myself. So I'm gonna tack on a Part [D]: posting the word here. And I'm gonna call it WOTD , because ¡abbreviations! And when I'm bored at work I'm gonna scout out a word that be Fun and Interesting ( forms thereof  duh), and I'm prolly gonna match the first letter to the day of the week because ¡alliteration! And I'm gonna invite you to do the same, whenever you have occasion.  ~ Angiepymyjew

prewar is the old black

So last weekend I was watching me some OITNB in the middle of the day... it looked like this and like this ...when, suddenly, it happened: perfectly prewar bathroom set! complete with yellow and black porcelain tiles and the black towel rack that leaves gaping holes in the wall upon removal and that "IS NOT YOUR GYMNASTICS BAR, RACHIE!!!" Thank goodness Tabitha for screenshots!

One frosty winter's eve, Angiepymy had a question about disinfectants .  She did not get far. [ link ] You spent  your upbringing 1 2003-2012 going to the finest of schools. Your parents dished out thousands for college and you always 2 got excellent grades. But instead you only want to play croquet ? All the time? Fortunately you are intelligent and have a solid base of morals on your shoulders. Even so, your lack of kindness leaves you playing alone often. Look for a man with a head of flames, like Hades. 1  cf stinky street 2   as if! Today OKCupid rendered the most accurate DumbOnlineQuiz result I've ever seen. I suppose that OKCupid in the hand is worth 1,000 quizillas in the bush. Does that count as a moral to this story? Straight out of Aesop, I swear. g2g disinfect my mallet  now. this has been #real. </angiesilly>

A Krampus Story

Image
Presenting, for your giggling pleasure, the following magic(k)al, German photoset: " A participant dressed as Krampus walks the streets in search of delinquent children during Krampusnacht on November 30, 2013 in Neustift im Stubaital, Austria. Sixteen Krampus groups including over 200 Krampuses participated in the first annual Neustift event. Krampus, in Tyrol also called Tuifl, is a demon-like creature represented by a fearsome, hand-carved wooden mask with animal horns, a suit made from sheep or goat skin and large cow bells attached to the waist that the wearer rings by running or shaking his hips up and down. Krampus has been a part of Central European, alpine folklore going back at least a millennium, and since the 17th-century Krampus traditionally accompanies St. Nicholas and angels on the evening of December 5 to visit households to reward children that have been good while reprimanding those who have not.(Sean Gallup/Getty Images" "Partici...
