Wuthering Heights
The Village Voice wrote a review of the movie. Haven't read it yet, but I thought it belonged here. Obviously.

the review focused itself on the race issue and raised some important questions about loyalty to the novel in film portrayals. lawrence olivier (heathcliff in 1939 version), even with his dark hair, is WHITE; his physique remains quite appealing to audiences/rachel. does the visual appeal make cathy's attraction to him more relatable? is that even the point? perhaps catherine loves heathcliff in spite of his ugliness inside and out? all the book says is that he's dark and dirty, as a child, and that he grows into a handsome and manly presence. who knows what "dark" meant to emily brontë, anyway. as the Voice article explains, most brits of the 1700s had ne'er seen a real african person.
ReplyDeletetheir loss.
another thought is that shifting the issue from class to race makes the conflict more pronounced for a 2012 audience
ReplyDeletei pretty much agree with this evaluation: http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2011/sep/06/wuthering-heights-review
